A fresh ironing board cover can improve the look of your laundry area and replace a tired, marked or worn cover. But the words universal or one size on packaging do not guarantee that a cover fits absolutely every board. A quick measurement check before ordering can save a return.
1. Measure your ironing board
With the board unfolded and stable, measure the length and widest width of the ironing surface. Check the end shape too: some boards are sharply tapered, some have a rounded nose, and wider models can need a different cover.
Where possible, compare these measurements with the exact dimensions or fit information printed on the replacement cover's packaging. If a universal cover has no dimensions stated, ask the seller before relying on it to fit an unusually large or compact board.
2. Check how the cover attaches
Ironing board covers can use different tensioning or fastening methods, including drawcords, elastic edges, ties and clips. Check the actual item packaging to identify its system, rather than assuming every universal cover attaches the same way.
3. Consider the pattern
Once you have checked fit, the choice between patterns is mainly personal preference. A neutral leaf pattern works well for a softer, understated look, while a blue geometric design gives a more modern patterned appearance.

4. How to replace an ironing board cover
- Allow the board and any iron to cool fully, and unplug the iron.
- Remove the old cover and check the condition of any existing padding.
- Position the new cover so it follows the board shape and sits centrally.
- Use the fastening system supplied with the cover according to its packaging instructions.
- Smooth out wrinkles and confirm the cover is secure before using the ironing board.
Common questions
Does a one-size ironing board cover fit every board?
No. The word universal describes broad intended compatibility but sizes and fastening systems vary. Measure your board and check the product's sizing information first.
Can I use a cover on a damaged ironing board?
A replacement cover does not repair a broken, unstable or damaged frame. If your board is unsafe or unstable, repair or replace the board itself before use.
Should I replace the padding too?
That depends on the cover design and the state of your current padding. Follow the instructions on your actual cover packaging and replace badly worn padding as appropriate.
Are the W5 covers new?
The W5 covers currently listed by ODDSTOCKS are brand-new items in original retail packaging. Browse our Home & Garden collection for both designs and other changing clearance stock.
